The writer-revolutionary, Frantz Fanon began his famous essay on the lived experience of blackness with the memorable words ‘Look, a Negro!’ Much of what is presumed about Africa/ Africans has its basis in a gaze that is obsessed with cosmetics. Yet, beneath the obvious surface is an infinitely rich and textured world of complex identities, aspirations and desires.
The year’s Ake Festival explores the ‘gaze’ and the latitudes enjoyed by those who are gazed upon. In addition to conversations on and around identity, Ake Arts and Book Festival 2016 will explore Erotica, prison stories and horror fiction, within an African context.
The theme for Ake Arts and Book Festival 2016 is Beneath This Skin.
