Marguerite Abouet

Born in Abidjan, Marguerite Abouet is an author and comic book writer. After a career as a legal assistant, she decided to devote herself to writing and created the character of Aya through which she depicts, with humor, an Africa far from the clichés of war and famine. The 6 volumes of Aya de Yopougon, illustrated by Clement Oubrerie were published by Gallimard between 2005 and 2010. The series chronicles the daily life of a group of teenagers in the Yopougon neighborhood of Abidjan in the late 1970s. She then decided to tackle the adaptation for the big screen. The film, Aya de Yopougon was co-directed with Clement Oubrerie and released in 2013. Other works by Abouet include the comics, Akissi (7 volumes) and Welcome" (3 volumes). The television series ‘That's life’ (season 1 and 2) including airs on TV5 Monde and A+ / Africa.
